About US

Our Mission

Our goal is to preserve and promote the appreciation and performance of traditional and contemporary folk music and dance in American culture.

We meet that goal throughout the year in the Southern Maryland region by sponsoring monthly contra dances and concerts and occasional workshops. In addition, many of our members play out in jams, house concerts, and other civic events.

We believe that traditional music and dance are an important part of our heritage. We love learning it, playing it, dancing to it, and listening to it, and we want to preserve it by passing it along

Where we meet: We generally meet at the Christ Episcopal Church - Parish Hall, 37497 Zach Fowler Rd., Chaptico, MD. We do occasionally move the venue or the night due to circumstances, so it is wise to double check if you don't already regularly show up to events.

SMTMD Behavior Code

Welcome to Southern Maryland Traditional Music and Dance! Our goal is to provide a safe, comfortable, and fun dip into traditional music for all of our friends, families, and guests.

Dance etiquette encourages open and friendly behavior and direct communication with your partner. Anyone may ask you to dance, but you are free to decline—without explanation.

Please consider the safety and comfort level of others. While at the dance, respect your partner's dance style, and politely comply with requests to avoid vigorous dance moves or any behavior that makes your partner uncomfortable. At all events, respect others’ personal space.

At SMTMD, any behavior that makes folks feel uncomfortable is not allowed. If you experience behavior that is uncomfortable or offensive to you, please 1.) tell the person whose behavior is bothering you to stop, and 2.) tell the door worker or a board member what has occurred. If you are a third party and simply see or hear some inappropriate behavior, tell a board member right away.
